Sustainable fashion & lifestyle at De Nieuwe Natie

De Nieuwe Natie

Sustainable fashion is the next big thing in fashion world. I prefer to support local shops instead of large chain stores and I’m really into Belgian and sustainable fashion. Although I must say a lot of people think sustainable fashion is boring. This week I attended a bloggers night at De Nieuwe Natie. For those who don’t know this concept, I’ll quickly explain what it’s about. De Nieuwe Natie gives creative entrepreneurs a chance to showcase their work. It’s a pop-up store, all the brands have their own corner for a certain period. This evening was all about sustainable fashion and lifestyle. If you’re one of those people who thinks sustainable fashion is boring: I can assure you, these brands prove it isn’t boring at all. Time to tell you about the different entrepreneurs and their work.

First up was Ms. Bay: an accessories brand made out of salmon leather. The lady behind this brand told me some people want to smell the leather, because they believe it smells like fish which is ofcourse not true. 😉  I hadn’t heard of salmon leather so I was actually really curious. Ms. Bay recycles the skin of salmon and every piece is made in India with Fairtrade certification.

Did you know salmon skins are a waste product and that only 1% is being recycled? Salmon leather can be processed in a more environmental-friendly way compared to other types of leather and is environmental-friendly. Need I say more?

‘Ms. Bay is not your average luxury handbag brand. We do not only care for the perfect design, top-quality materials and flawless execution.
We care for our common future. Our ideology is one of timeless design, social responsibility and environmental awareness.’

Have you heard of Bali Beach? I’ve heard so much about it and that evening I could finally discover this brand! The story began when 2 people fell in love with Bali. They have a concept store in Knokke and became a total concept combining fashion, lifestyle and cosmetics.

I first discovered Bali Beach when I heard about their delicious fruit ice creams (Bali Beach Frops) which are gluten and lactose free, contain no fat and are calorie-poor. Sounds amazing, right? But right now they’ve developed  recyclable bags as well.  Although Bali is known for its beautiful landscape, breathtaking views and beaches, there is a lot of waste. The famous beaches are indunated wit a rising tide of plastic waste. Bali Beach wants to do something about this problem and reduces this plastic waste.

They have a wide collection of different things: cosmetics, T-shirts, bags etc. The items are handmade in Bali.

Ophelia Lingerie is one of my favourite discoveries. Every item is handmade, feminine and elegant. The items stimulate women to embrace their curves instead of hiding them. Perfect! I loved the designs, the new collection contains a lot of lace, one of the trends I love. AR.M was our next stop. Anna Rose Moschouti and her team make handmade jewelery. All items are made with materials from small European producers. The designs are very modern and timeless, perfect as a gift!

Ketura immediately caught my attention when I entered the room. Jennique Ketura is the creative lady behind this label. She wants to get more color in the streets of Antwerp. Her collection consists of contemporary clothing with African prints. She creates jackets, dresses, skirts and accessories. I love the different jeans jackets. We should all wear more colour!

We also saw the work of Hygge, which is a shop for kids, the most ecological jeans of Hnst and Candy Factory which I’ll tell you about in a new post. A special thanks goes out to Isabelle from De Hovre pr. Thanks for having me!

Ik wist helemaal niet dat zalmleder bestond! Goed dat er dan toch nog iets van de huid gemaakt wordt en dat het niet gewoon bij het afval terechtkomt.
