The Instagram algorithm, love it or hate it, but it affects every single person on Instagram. Bloggers/ social media ‘influencers’ hate it, I hear them complaining about it every single day. If you search for this subject on Google, you find an entire list of articles about this new algorithm. After doing own research, I’ve decided I actually like this algorithm, you don’t have to believe everything you read on the internet. For those who don’t know how this algorithm works, and what you can do to ‘beat’ it, I’ll explain it in today’s post!
chronological vs interests
In the past, everything was chronologically arranged. Instagram was all about what you were doing at that certain moment, like for example posting a photo of your outfit of the day. But Instagram was dealing with a serious problem: too much content. Nowadays we are all following a lot of people, and we can’t see everything that is being posted. The struggle was real, Instagram had to come up with a solution.
This new algorithm is the solution and it’s actually not as bad as it seems… Everything is based on your own interests: the things you like, you share and save! You’ll only see people and content you’re really interested in. Perfect, right?
But why aren’t bloggers happy about it? The answer is quite simple: in general likes/ views are dropping and ‘large influencers’ do make money out of social media. Full time bloggers will get less business opportunities, because numbers are still very important to companies. But why are these likes and views dropping and what can you do to beat this algorithm? One word: engagement.
It’s all about engagement
Did you know that only about 10% of your followers sees your photo, when you’ve just published it? The 10% determines your organic reach. Meaning: When your photo gets a lot of likes and comments/ shares within those first minutes, you’ll reach a lot of people. So what does this mean? Basically you have to make sure your followers are loyal and are true ‘fans’. Interact with them, comment back on their photos and answer questions. In this way they’ll continue liking/ commenting and saving your pictures.
Content is king, but engagement is queen. Think about it and this new algorithm could change your life! By the way: aren’t following me on Instagram yet? Visit my profile over here: www.instagram.com/littlelouvain 😉
How to grow your Instagram
Important things you should keep in mind to grow your Instagram:
- As mentioned before, engagement is important! Comment back on photos when somebody leaves a comment on your photo.
- Use hashtags. Avoid copy-pasting! Try to vary hashtags, using the same hashtags on every picture can give the impression of spam. Instagram detects this kind of posts.
- Content is king: post high quality photos, based on the interests of your followers. Stick to your idea, find a niche.
- Find a good balance between sponsored/ not-sponsored content.
- Find what works best for you. In general I get more likes when I’m in the picture. Photos with coffee or nailart do get a lot of likes as well!
